Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has launched a scathing assessment of Manchester United's squad, claiming several players no longer meet the standards required at a club with such lofty ambitions. The former Reds captain highlighted deep-rooted issues in defence, midfield, and attack, though he maintained that Bruno Fernandes remains a genuine top-class performer.
"If you look at the squad, defensively Harry Maguire has had a good career, and Luke Shaw was a really good player in his prime. But they are no longer Manchester United quality. They should have been moved on earlier," Gerrard stated. He also took aim at Lisandro Martinez over his public comments regarding the lack of transfer market backing for Michael Carrick.
Gerrard went on to question the pedigree of Andrey Santos, signed from Chelsea for £50 million, as well as Carlos Baleba, who cost United around £70 million. "Why are you signing players who simply aren't good enough to play for Manchester United? Baleba has potential, but he's not yet ready to help this team challenge at the top of the league," the former England international commented.
He also expressed frustration with the team's wide options, labelling Amad Diallo's form as far too inconsistent. While Gerrard commended Bryan Mbeumo for his displays this season, he cast doubt on Matheus Cunha's role, arguing the forward hasn't shown enough to cement a permanent starting berth. "The problems are all over the pitch," the former Liverpool skipper concluded.
