George Russell: My Mercedes Seat Was Never Threatened by Verstappen

British driver George Russell has stated that his position at Mercedes was never “under threat” from Max Verstappen, despite Toto Wolff publicly courting the Red Bull driver over the past few years.

For a long time, speculation suggested that Russell would most likely be the one to make way for the four-time Formula 1 world champion if Verstappen were to be lured away from his current team. It was believed that the other “Silver Arrows” driver, Kimi Antonelli, was in a more secure position.

Russell repeatedly addressed the topic with the media, particularly last year. However, he let his on-track performance in 2025 speak for itself, which ultimately secured him a contract extension and protected his seat from the Dutchman.

Verstappen has since renewed his contract with the Milton Keynes-based team until the end of 2030. While McLaren emerged as a primary alternative in recent months, Wolff had long believed that a partnership between Mercedes and the 28-year-old driver was something that should – and perhaps would – happen at some point.

Despite the constant buzz surrounding the issue, Russell claims he only commented on the matter when pressed by the media, and it didn't bother him.

“It's only a topic for us when we're sitting in front of you, the journalists, and you want to ask these questions and find out what's going on,” he told media today at Zandvoort. “At Mercedes, it's always been completely clear what the reality has been over the last few years. Perhaps those conversations were a little more public than the conversations Verstappen's team has had with teams like McLaren, Ferrari, or anyone else.”

Russell was quick to point out that such battles and speculation over team seats occur throughout the paddock and that discussions are routine practice as parties explore alternatives and contingency plans.

Despite the uncertain nature of life in Formula 1, he is adamant that he always felt “100 percent” secure with Toto Wolff, regardless of what was happening behind the scenes at Mercedes.

“That's the nature of the sport,” Russell added. “Drivers talk to different teams. Teams talk to different drivers. Everyone just has to see what their cards are. But my place never felt threatened, and I had 100 percent assurance from Toto and the team, which obviously continues now.”
