George Russell light-heartedly suggested that his recent engagement to Carmen Montero Mund played a role in him clinching sprint pole position at the Dutch Grand Prix.

The British driver silenced his critics by securing his third sprint pole position of the season, outperforming Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc at the Zandvoort circuit.

This marks a perfect return for the 28-year-old after the summer break, which he entered following a dismal run of results and significant questions surrounding his performance compared to his Mercedes teammate, Kimi Antonelli.

During the summer hiatus, Russell announced his engagement. After securing the top spot in sprint qualifying, the seven-time Grand Prix winner playfully remarked over team radio that he must be lighter without the weight of an engagement ring.

The happy news for Russell was a significant talking point at the start of the Dutch weekend, but he quickly shifted focus back to on-track matters when handed a microphone.

“It’s great to be back here after the break,” Russell said after exiting his W17. “This is a track I truly love, and it demands a lot of commitment.”
“Obviously, the end of the first half of the year was tough. We’re really happy to be back. It’s been a while since I’ve given one of these interviews, so yeah, it was nice.”

The Mercedes driver emphasized the difficulty of executing his perfect lap but was undeniably pleased with his effort.

“The lap felt really good, honestly,” Russell added. “Everything came together well. It’s always tricky with these sprint qualifying sessions when you only get one attempt on the soft tires.”
“The track is always improving. Grip levels increase, but everything aligned perfectly. McLaren look quick, Ferrari look quick, but I’m really happy that I delivered when it mattered.”
