Frustration and Disappointment Following First Defeat: City Boss Reacts to Dropped Points: 'We Didn't Deserve to Lose'

Manchester City suffered their first defeat of the season against Aston Villa. Manager Enzo Maresca and defender Ruben Dias expressed their frustration, insisting the team's performance did not warrant the loss.

"It's frustrating because we felt like we really fought hard. It just wasn't our day, and the opposition was very clinical," City defender Ruben Dias said following the defeat.

Aston Villa entered the clash on a seven-match unbeaten run across all competitions (W6 D1 L0). Full of confidence against the favoured Citizens, having beaten them in their previous two meetings, Villa got an early boost in the 6th minute. Nicolas Jackson pounced on a turnover in City's build-up, neatly cut inside Elliot Anderson, and beat Gianluigi Donnarumma on the counter-attack.

Manchester equalised in the 52nd minute courtesy of an Erling Haaland header, marking his fourth consecutive competitive game on the scoresheet. The Norwegian now has nine goals to his name after eight Premier League rounds.

The hosts regained the lead on the hour mark when Jackson's low drive from the edge of the box beat Donnarumma. That proved to be the final goal of the contest, leaving the visitors empty-handed despite dominating the shot count 15 to 8 (7 to 2 on target).

"Our overall performance was good. We created a lot of chances. In the second half, we conceded from one isolated counter-attack. You have to defend those situations better, and sometimes you also need a bit of luck. That's football. We'll learn from this and move on. I don't think we deserved to lose, but we did. There are certainly things we could have done better today," said City manager Enzo Maresca.

Aston Villa defender Matty Cash praised the team's approach: "When you play against top teams, you have to adapt. We did that really well today." The Birmingham-based club started their Premier League campaign with two defeats and a draw, but their form has been on an upward trajectory ever since.

Villa have remained unbeaten since 16 September, winning seven of their last eight matches.

"Today was truly fantastic. Things shifted overnight after we failed to beat Arsenal, Nottingham, and Brentford, but today we should feel happy and enjoy the weekend. We want to be at this level and go toe-to-toe with teams like Manchester City," Aston Villa manager Unai Emery noted.
