LIVE: France vs. Spain
The World Cup in the United States has reached its most critical stage, with the gates to the final set to open on Tuesday evening at the stadium in Arlington, Texas. The first semi-final features a purely European clash between two giants who have been setting the trends in modern football in recent years. The formidable French side will face the tactically flawless Spanish team. It will be a clash of two different footballing philosophies, with the winner taking the penultimate step towards the coveted world title.
Spain's "La Furia Roja" is experiencing a moment of great vindication at this tournament. It has been 16 years since their only World Cup triumph, and in the three subsequent championships, the national team failed to even reach the quarter-finals. However, the current generation has definitively put those unflattering statistics behind them.
Paradoxically, it all began with an unexpected goalless draw in their opening group match against Cape Verde. From that moment on, however, Luis de la Fuente's men have been impenetrable, not conceding a single goal in the following four matches. In the group stage, they navigated crucial games, including a nail-biting 1-0 victory over Uruguay.
The Spanish demonstrated their dominance in the first knockout round against Austria, securing a convincing 3-0 win with an excellent performance. The real test of character, however, came in the quarter-final against Portugal. The tight, tactical affair was decided by a stoppage-time goal from substitute Mikel Merino.
This invaluable "super-sub" reprised his heroic role in the subsequent quarter-final clash with Belgium. With the match heading towards extra time, Merino snatched a 2-1 victory for Spain in the 88th minute. Conceding their first goal of the tournament was of little concern to the Spanish camp. More good news for de la Fuente is the return of winger Nico Williams from injury, while the dangerous Yeremy Pino will also be fully available.
France, on the other hand, are living up to their reputation as the tournament powerhouse of the last decade. "Les Bleus" have reached the final in the last two World Cups – after winning the title in 2018, they were denied a repeat four years later only by a penalty shootout against Argentina.
Their journey in 2026 has been flawless so far. They didn't drop a single point in the group stage, scoring an impressive 10 goals. They continued this trend in the round of 16, comfortably dispatching Sweden with a 3-0 victory.
However, their mental fortitude was most severely tested in the round of 16 against Paraguay. The 1-0 win did not come easily, as the match was marred by numerous unsportsmanlike moments and provocations, but the French kept their cool. In the quarter-final against an in-form Morocco, they were dominant once again, winning 2-0, unfazed even by Kylian Mbappé's missed penalty in the first half.
Although Mbappé and midfielder Manu Koné did not finish the match due to minor knocks, the medical team is working around the clock, and both are expected to be fully fit for the semi-final. The only remaining obstacle is the continued absence of the injured Marcus Thuram.
A look at the recent history of their head-to-head encounters promises an exceptionally dramatic spectacle. A year ago, these teams met in the Nations League semi-final, where fans witnessed a wild, high-scoring 5-4 victory for Spain. Almost exactly two years ago, Spain also celebrated a 2-1 win in the semi-final of EURO 2024.
