Former Super Falcons star inducted into hall of fame in America

Former Super Falcons star, Mercy Akidehas been be inducted into the hall of fame in America on Friday, October, 23.

Akide who played in three FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments for Nigeria was inducted into the Milligan College Athletic Hall of Fame as part of the college’s annual Homecoming festivities.

The 40-year was honoured for her achievement both as a player and as a coach.

Akide played for Milligan College between 1999 and 2000 and holds three Milligan soccer records- goals in a single game (7), goals in a single season (42) and points in a single season (99).

Her 42 goals in 1999 helped Milligan record its most win in season in the  history of the soccer program as the team went 19-2-1 and was undefeated in the Tennessee Valley Athletic Conference at 5-0.

Akide revealed on Instagram that she had a great time back at the Milligan to celebrate the homecoming festivities.

“Homecoming was great... could not have missed it for anything.... So grateful that I could spend it with the kids.... they're the love of my life,” she wrote on Instagram.

Akide won three African Women Championship with the Super Falcons in 1998, 2000 and 2002.

Akide also competed in the Olympic Games in Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004) and was also awarded the first African woman Player of the Year.

She is now a coach and youth development director for various U-16 and U-13 teams in the United States.

Akide was inducted into the United Soccer Leagues' Hall of Fame in 2013.

She is currently married to ace Nigerian sports journalist, Colin Udoh and they reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with their two children.
