Former German defender Per Mertesacker has expressed his readiness to work for the German Football Association (DFB) in the future. A member of the 2014 World Cup-winning squad, Mertesacker also brings experience in youth football, having led Arsenal's academy for eight years.
Jürgen Klopp appears to be a frontrunner to replace Julian Nagelsmann as national team coach, who resigned after Germany's early exit from the World Cup in North America. Additionally, Andreas Rettig, the managing director for sports affairs at the DFB, is also set to depart in December.
“To work for the federation someday, to give something back to German football, to which I owe so much – if that becomes necessary – of course, I would be available for that,” commented the 41-year-old Mertesacker to ZDF, where he is currently working as an expert for the 2026 World Cup.
It remains unclear whether Rudi Völler will continue in his role as sporting director at the German Football Association.
