NK fell face down into her bed, too exhausted to shower and eat.
After lying down for some minutes, it came as a surprise that she could not sleep, considering how tired she was.
Instead, her mind was clouded with thoughts. She thought of her husband lying in the ICU and the tears she had shed.
She realized now that she had been crying for her own self; her fear of losing her husband at such a young age, her fear of becoming a widow.
The tears were not really for Chike, they were for her. There was no love lost between husband and wife. The longest conversations they had in recent times were arguments that ended with his fist or palm stinging on her cheek.
NK heaved a sigh of relief; she was grateful that he was in a stable condition now. Maybe he would change after recovering.
Her mind drifted to the kind older man who had held her hand through those excruciating hours of waiting. A smile lingered on her lips till she drifted off into sleep.
