First Major Signing of the Michael Carrick Era: Manchester United Unveil Casemiro's Replacement
While the clubs did not disclose the transfer fee, British media reports indicate the Red Devils paid £48 million for their new acquisition, with an additional £2 million in add-ons. Chelsea will also be entitled to ten percent of any future sale.
"Everything about Manchester United is exceptional. It's an incredible feeling to join a club represented by some of my biggest idols," Santos was quoted as saying by AP.
"As a midfielder, I'm truly excited to have the opportunity to learn from Michael Carrick. He's a perfect coach who will help me take the next step in my career and move closer to achieving my dreams," he added in his statement.
Andrey Santos made 43 appearances across all competitions for Chelsea last season. He also has six caps for the national team but was not included in Brazil's squad for the 2026 World Cup.
United had been looking to strengthen their midfield following Casemiro's departure and Manuel Ugarte's long-term injury. According to bbc.com, Michael Carrick's side also pursued Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, but they opted for moves to Manchester City and Tottenham, respectively.
British media also suggest that the arrival of Belgian Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa is still on the cards. Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on Monday that United have already activated Tielemans' €41 million release clause.
The twenty-time English champions are also without midfielder Kobbie Mainoo at the start of pre-season, as he is currently with the national team at the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
