In a move echoing American sports traditions, FIFA has announced that the winners of the World Cup final will receive championship rings.
This Sunday, Spain and Argentina will battle it out in New Jersey to crown the new world champions. The victors will be awarded rings, similar to those presented to champions in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the National Football League (NFL). One side of the ring will feature the World Cup trophy, while the other will be custom-designed for each player and coach.
In addition to the 30 rings for the winning team, FIFA will also release 1996 replica rings for fans worldwide. However, the global governing body clarified that these rings will not replace the traditional medals.
