Flooding and severe storms threatening Mexico City nearly disrupted the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 schedule. Due to concerns about extreme weather, FIFA management considered moving the kick-off of the home team's clash against England forward by six hours.

These considerations immediately met with harsh criticism from the home camp. Mexico's coach, Javier Aguirre, openly expressed his immense indignation to the Associated Press over the disruption to their pre-match routine:
“It’s like a kick in the teeth. We would have to change everything; almost all the work in preparation for the match would be for nothing. We would have to shift six hours in our schedule, and none of the players can be happy about that.”
However, the radical step will ultimately not be taken. The battle for advancement remains on its original schedule and will kick off at the legendary Azteca Stadium on Monday night at precisely 2:00 AM CET.
