The seven-time world champion clocked a fastest lap of 1:18.729, with Leclerc trailing him by 0.148 seconds.

Lando Norris of McLaren finished third, though he was nearly half a second adrift of his compatriot.

The top six was rounded out by Max Verstappen (Red Bull), George Russell (Mercedes), and Isack Hadjar in the other Red Bull. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes) could only manage 13th, 1.964 seconds off the pace during his qualifying simulation on soft tires.

The Ferrari drivers were the only ones who seemed unaffected by the changing track conditions, which included lower air and asphalt temperatures, as well as shifts in wind speed and direction, maintaining excellent car balance throughout.
