Prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana is urging the government to arrest and prosecute anyone found guilty of
Falana’s call comes in response to an alarm raised by Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai who warned his men to stop cozying up to politicians.
The lawyer made the call over the weekend while speaking in Ilorin, Kwara State, Daily Trust reports.
“The political class should stop playing into the hands of potential coup plotters. While the decision of the Army chief to alert the nation of the devilish plot is appreciated, the authorities should proceed to fish out the coup plotters and their civilian collaborators with a view to trying them for treasonable felony,” he said.
“Notwithstanding the glaring shortcomings of the fragile democratic process, the people should be allowed to take advantage of the democratic structures to take their political destiny in their own hands,” he added.
Buratai’s warning triggered fears that some soldiers had begun working with politicians to overthrow President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari is currently in London on an indefinite leave after months of ill-health.
His deputy, Yemi Osinbajo has been acting as Nigeria’s president since Buhari’s departure on May 7.
