Everton secured a 1-0 victory over Newcastle at St James' Park in the Premier League. Thierno Barry (49') struck the only goal of the match, while the hosts finished with ten men following Jacob Ramsey's stoppage-time dismissal. The win brought an end to the Toffees' two-game losing run and a three-match winless streak in the league.
A fairly balanced first half saw the visitors fashion a golden opportunity right on the stroke of half-time. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall cut the ball back to an unmarked Harrison Armstrong, who dragged his effort wide of the target.
Everton broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half. Dewsbury-Hall carved open the defence with an exquisite through ball to Tyrique George, whose shot was saved before Barry pounced on the rebound to slot home from close range.
Jarrad Branthwaite came close to doubling the lead in the 55th minute, but Martin Hornicek reacted well to keep out his header from George's cross.
Newcastle missed their best chance to level the scores in the 67th minute when Anthony Elanga struck the post from close range, with the ball trickling along the goal line before being cleared to safety.
Deep into added time, the home side were reduced to ten men. In the 98th minute, Ramsey received a second yellow card for a dangerous challenge on Armstrong in the middle of the park.
The victory halts Everton's two-match league losing run and lifts them into seventh place on 13 points. Newcastle remain on 11 points, sitting in 13th.
