Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has confirmed the club is parting ways with Ollie Watkins, who is set to join Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in a £50 million deal. His replacement leading the line for the Birmingham club will be Nicolas Jackson, expected to arrive from Chelsea for £65 million including add-ons. The Villans are hopeful Jackson will be available for Monday's home fixture against Arsenal.
"Watkins apologized after the Brighton match (editor's note - Emery had left him out of the squad then, telling journalists to ask the player himself why he wasn't included). He made a mistake, but otherwise, he has always treated the club and me well. We said goodbye with a big hug and a few tears. Now we are starting a new chapter with Nicolas Jackson. Of course, I wish him all the best in Saudi Arabia. We will replace him," Emery stated at his press conference today.
When asked if Jackson would be signed in time to play against Arsenal, he added: "I hope so."
Emery also elaborated on his expectations for new signing Leon Goretzka: "Experience, and high-level experience at that. He is a winner, a very competitive player. He is still young, at 31. For us, he is a good player to add to our squad, to our structure. A footballer with experience, with quality, a versatile player who can play in different positions, mainly as a midfielder. He arrived in shape, trained well, and we hope he can be on the pitch on Monday."
