British Man Suspected To Have Died Of Disease In Macedonian Hotel

Fears of a worldwide spread of Ebola have escalated after a British man, suspected of having the disease, died in Macedonia.

The unidentified 58-year-old died in Skopje, the nation’s capital, yesterday, October 9, after exhibiting symptoms of the disease and a friend of his is also symptomatic, Daily Mail reports.

The hotel that both men stayed in has been quarantined even as the friend of the deceased told authorities that neither of them had visited any country affected by Ebola.

Alfa TV of Macedonia reported that  the patient was admitted to an infection clinic in the capital city with symptoms of the disease after being rushed there at about 3pm.

He died several hours later and his death and nationality have been confirmed by the Macedonian Foreign Ministry.

A spokesperson from the ministry said:

'I can confirm that a British person has died and he is in the state hospital in Skopje.

'We are looking to see what are the reasons according to the protocols of the World Health Organization.

'There was a friend with him and he has also been retained in the hospital and the crew from the ambulance are also retained in the hospital.'

An official with the ministry's commission for infectious diseases, Dr. Jovanka Kostovska reportedly said that the deceased had been suffering from fever, vomiting and internal bleeding, and that his condition deteriorated rapidly.

Kostovska added:

'These are all symptoms of Ebola, which raises suspicions with this patient,' Kostovska told a news conference, adding that samples had been sent to Germany for tests to confirm the cause of death.”

Two other British citizens have been quarantined along with staff of the hotel and have the ambulance team and health workers that treated the deceased.
