Dr. Richard Sacra is back in hospital after being infected with Ebola in Liberia and recovering from the illness on his return to the US

An American doctor and missionary, who got infected with Ebola in Liberia but recovered upon return to the US, is back in hospital.

Dr. Richard Sacra has been admitted at the UMass Memorial Medical Center for what is believed to be a respiratory infection, NY daily reports.

Hospital officials say Sacra has a cough and conjunctivitis but they doubt that he is suffering a recurrence of Ebola.

The doctor in charge of Sacra’s treatment, Robert Finberg said:

"We are isolating Dr. Sacra to be cautious pending final confirmation of his illness," "We think it is highly unlikely that he has Ebola. We suspect he has an upper respiratory tract infection."

However, in line with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) procedure, he is being kept in isolation until it is certain that he hasn’t been re-infected with the disease
