After 18 years, Russell Westbrook has decided to hang up his sneakers. The most significant and impactful part of his career was spent in an Oklahoma City Thunder jersey. There, he played alongside Kevin Durant, who emotionally bid farewell to his friend and former teammate.

I remember asking assistant coach Mo Cheeks, "What's tougher? Hitting the gym after practice or before?" I only asked because Russ, by the time I'd even arrive at the arena in the morning, would have already finished his workout, while I usually did mine after practice. Mo told me, "Coming in before practice is probably tougher." From then on, that became my routine... Many people saw the emotion on the court and thought Russ was loud – no, to me, he was quiet and methodical. He led by example, and when the lights came on, he'd pour everything out, experiencing pure freedom. It was inspiring to be his teammate, and everywhere I've been, I've seen how he inspired people from all walks of life. The craziest thing is he didn't talk much; he just showed up. And he did that for 18 years. This basketball life is our world as professionals; what we invest on that court means everything to us. Some of us wish we could go back and do things with a bit more intention and dedication, while others can simply wipe their hands and be content with the time invested. Who will you be? We know who Zero was... Keep inspiring in the next phase of life, champ. Whatever happens, what was cannot be erased... Young guys, making it to the Finals in our early twenties, All-Star games, watching each other get injured and come back even stronger, bus rides, plane flights, card games, jokes and arguments, all of it – unforgettable! To the entire Westbrook family, Nina, the kids, Mama Westbrook, Big Russ, Ray, Donell, everyone from Leuzinger High School and UCLA, and many others I've forgotten, much love and congratulations on a legendary career. Kevin Durant
Westbrook and Durant played together from 2009 to 2016, until Durant decided to join the Golden State Warriors. Following that decision, Westbrook took the reins in Oklahoma and became the MVP the following season.
