Dolly Parton, country music legend, dies at 80 after battling cancer

Dolly Parton, one of the most influential figures in country music history, has died at the age of 80.

Parton’s team announced that the singer, songwriter and actress died after a brief battle with cancer. She passed away in Nashville, Tennessee, surrounded by loved ones, according to a statement released by her publicist. 

Her death was announced by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, who shared the news on social media on behalf of the Parton and Owens family.

Born in Tennessee in 1946, Parton rose from a poor upbringing in the Appalachian Mountains to become one of the world’s most recognised entertainers.

She became famous for her distinctive voice, songwriting ability and colourful personality, producing some of country music’s most enduring songs, including “Jolene”, “Coat of Many Colors”, “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You”. 

Over a career spanning more than six decades, Parton released dozens of albums, sold more than 100 million records worldwide and earned 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award. 

Beyond music, Parton built a reputation as an actress, businesswoman and philanthropist. She starred in films including 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias and founded the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, a literacy programme that provides free books to children.

Her humanitarian work also included a $1 million donation that supported research linked to the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, alongside other charitable efforts.
