Demi Lovato Took The Month Off The Gym, Due To Her Past Struggles With Eating Disorders
Over the weekend, Demi Lovato shared some candid thoughts on body acceptance at the Teen Vogue Summit. During an onstage interview with Teen Vogue editor in chief Lindsay Peoples Wagner, the 27-year-old pop star opened up about what the last year since her accidental drug overdose has been like for her. Notably, she revealed that she took a break from going to the gym as a way to embrace her body.
According to People , Demi said that she "took the month of October off the gym," due to her previous battles with eating disorders.
"For so many years I dealt with an eating disorder. What I wasnt ever open with myself about was, whenever I was in the gym I was doing it to an unhealthy extreme," she explained. "I think thats what led me down a darker pathI was still engaging in these behaviors."
While Demi's recently shared multiple raw and unedited bikini snaps on Instagram , the "Sober" singer added that she still battles with her body acceptance.
"We hear the term body positivity all the time. To be honest, I dont always feel positive about my body. Sometimes I do not like what I see," she said. "I dont sit there and dwell on it. I also dont lie to myself."
Instead, Demi's trying to change her perspective on body image by flipping the script. "I dont have to lie to myself and tell myself I have an amazing body. All I have to say is, Im healthy. In that statement, I express gratitude," she explained. "I am grateful for my strength and things I can do with my body. I am saying Im healthy and I accept the way my body is today without changing anything."
Demi also opened up about her past year, which included recovery from her drug overdose in July 2018. "What I see in the mirror [is] someone thats overcome a lot. Ive been through a lot and I genuinely see a fighter," she said. "I dont see a championship winner, but I see a fighter and someone who is going to continue to fight no matter what is thrown in their way."
