For all his braggadocio and fast living, Davido does genuinely care. And this is happening in an age where fandom for many celebrities is about how much money can be gleaned for them.

For an A-list star like Davido, many would expect the man to be far disconnected from the realities of what it feels like to be offstage and struggling to have a bit more with a performer.

That’s why this video of the singer defending his fans is a real and rare gem. In the video which was shared by Tooxclusive, Davido was performing a set at the JOOR concert, which was convened by industry veteran, DJ Kaywise.

The singer had gone through a set, and was pacing himself with some fan interaction. The fans closer to the stage were inching forward, chanting his street slogan “OBO” which is short for ‘Omo Baba Olowo’, and which translates into English as ‘son of a wealthy man’.

Davido, as he has done in many concerts smiled down at them and acknowledged the praises. While he appeared to move back from their outstretched hands, which prompted an overzealous security official to earn his pay by degrading the fans. He attacked a section of the fans with a lash, and as he struck, Davido swung to action.

The singer grabbed the official by his pants, and yanked him off the stage and out of sight, spurring a renewed chant by the fans, who were appreciative of the gesture.

As simple as that move is, it was a lot for the fans, and conveyed just how deeply the singer cares for his fans. These people came out to watch the singer transform his art into a live performance, and for them, that is an emotional exercise.

They are the true reason why the concert is alive, why the brand Davido exists and the point of the entire gathering. Why dehumanize the fans and subject them to a whipping for expressing unrefined emotion and connection.

This is true fandom, this is what the art is about. This is a live display of the power of music.

Davido has always in various ways connected with his fans and sought to make life better. By signing artistes on Instagram, to gifting various items over the years, he has constantly touched lives. By preventing the dehumanizing of his fans, he continues to be a poster boy for the good that music can do.

This is worthy of emulation, and should be the life goals of artistes. (Casts a glance the way of Burna Boy).
