Crossing the Line: Kylian Mbappé Dropped by Three Sponsors Over Controversial Comments
The Real Madrid forward has sparked outrage in China following the release of a video in which he referred to former Chinese leader Mao Zedong as a dictator. In response, several brands announced that they reject any statements or actions that "hurt the national feelings of the Chinese people."
During an appearance on the show The Bridge, the French international was asked about his favourite and funniest internet meme of himself. Mbappé replied that it was an edited image or video showing his face superimposed onto Mao Zedong wearing a blue suit, adding that he was a Chinese dictator.
Fans online often jokingly label the French superstar a "dictator," claiming his stature and influence overshadow teammates and entire squads. Various photoshopped images depicting him as different authoritarian figures have circulated widely across social media.
In the wake of his remarks, beverage manufacturer Dongpeng, dairy giant Mengniu, and cheese producer Milkground all severed ties with the player. In their official statements, all three companies reiterated that they condemn any words or actions that hurt national sentiment.
“Words and deeds that hurt the feelings of the Chinese people will naturally be met with joint opposition from all walks of Chinese society,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said, according to the AP. Joking about Mao Zedong, a founding father of the People's Republic of China, is viewed as deeply disrespectful in the country and remains a strict social taboo.
