The Croatian Football Federation has officially announced Slaven Bilić as the new head coach of the national team, following the departure of Zlatko Dalić, who led the squad to the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.
For the 57-year-old Bilić, this marks his second stint at the helm of his home country's national team. His first tenure as coach spanned six years, from 2006 to 2012. During that period, he guided the "Vatreni" at Euro 2008 and Euro 2012, reaching the quarter-finals in their first appearance. Now, his primary objective is to qualify Croatia for the European Championship for a third time. After leaving his previous role as national team coach, he managed several clubs: Lokomotiv Moscow, Beşiktaş, West Ham, Al-Ittihad, West Bromwich Albion, Beijing Guoan, Watford, and Al-Fateh, from which he departed nearly two years ago.
“I have full faith in our players, and it is my responsibility to bring energy, ambition, and determination to ensure Croatia remains among football's elite. I am truly excited to embark on this challenge and feel completely prepared for it. I am a more mature and experienced coach now compared to 2006, but I possess the same motivation and desire to see Croatia remain strong, brave, and successful,” Bilić stated during his media presentation. He also assured that he would try to convince 40-year-old captain Luka Modrić to continue playing for the team.
“My first step will be to finalize my coaching staff, as there are still some details to iron out. The second will be to speak with the players, first and foremost with Modrić. We all know who Luka is and what he represents. The decision is entirely his. He means as much to the national team as he does to football. He is much more than just our best player. I have already spoken with him, although that was a year ago. One of the first things I will do is speak with him again. Of course, I want him to continue playing for Croatia, but ultimately, the decision is his,” the new head coach added.
