The Madeira airport, located in Ronaldo’s hometown has been named after the Real Madrid star.

The naming of the airport after the football star is expected to boost tourism on the island of Madeira but the move has attracted a slew of criticisms.

In the rebranding of the airport, an image of Ronaldo's face now appears on the airport's signboard and a bronze statue sits outside the arrivals terminal.

The statue, however, questionably bears little resemblance to Ronaldo.

The criticism has gotten to Ronaldo who told fans at a ceremony on Wednesday, March 29 that he is not a hypocrite.

“My friend, I never asked for this, but I'm not a hypocrite, and I'm happy and honoured,” Ronaldo said.

“I know some people do not agree and I know some people who are not here would be happy for this moment.”

Many locals were however excited at the remaining of the airport and were at the ceremony to see their hero.

“Thank you for being here in my honour. Seeing my name being given to this airport is something very special, everyone knows that I am proud of my country and especially my home city,” Ronaldo said.

“Thank you very much to the president of the regional government Miguel Albuquerque for having had the courage and the firmness to do it.

“I will try to dignify Portugal and especially Madeira with a spirit of sacrifice, dignity and passion.”

Accompanying Ronaldo to the ceremony were his mother Maria Aveiro and his girlfriend, Georgina Rodriguez.
