According to reports, the doctor asked for a sum of N320,000 before he could carry out an operation on a man named Francis Ebeogbodi, now deceased.

Professor Martin Aghaji, a former Cardio-thoracic Surgeon in the Department of Surgery, University Of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, has been arrested for bribery.

He was arraigned by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission for demanding N320,000 before he could carry out an operation.

According to the Daily Post, this happened in 2003 when Aghaji was working as a Cardio-thoracic Surgeon in the Department of Surgery, UNTH.

He however collected a sum of N70,000 before he could perform a medical operation on Francis Ebeogbodi, who is now deceased.

Daily Post also reported that the charges leveled against the surgeon "bordered on administrative corruption, extortion and conferring corrupt advantages on himself, which violate Sections 8 and 19 and are punishable under Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000".

Aghaji was granted bail in the sum of N500,000 after pleading not guilty to the charges.
