Cooper Flagg, last year's top draft pick, has been named the NBA's Rookie of the Year, becoming only the third player in Dallas Mavericks history to earn the distinction. Flagg narrowly edged out his former Duke University teammate and roommate, Kon Knueppel.

Flagg now joins Jason Kidd (1995) and Luka Doncic (2019) as the only Mavericks players to claim the award. His victory caps off one of the most thrilling Rookie of the Year races in recent league memory.

Flagg's statistics were impressive, averaging 21 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.2 steals, and 0.9 blocks per game. He became the first rookie since Michael Jordan to lead his team in points, rebounds, assists, and steals. His versatility and historic performances, such as his 51-point outburst against the Orlando Magic on April 3rd — an NBA record for a teenager — were pivotal in the voting.

"It's a tremendous honor," Flagg stated in a press release. "I'm grateful to receive this award and I thank everyone in the Dallas Mavericks organization who believed in me from day one. None of this would be possible without my teammates, coaches, and the people around me pushing me every day. I came here to compete and help this team win. This is just one step forward in what we're building."

The voting was tight: Flagg received 56 first-place votes and 44 second-place votes, while Knueppel garnered 44 first-place votes and 55 second-place votes. Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe finished in third place. Flagg was in the top two on all 100 ballots, including that of A BOLA journalist Miguel Candeias; Knueppel was in the top two on 99 of 100, with only one ballot placing him third behind Edgecombe.

Kon Knueppel, the fourth overall pick by the Charlotte Hornets, also had a remarkable season. He averaged 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists, and stood out as the NBA's top three-point shooter, with a total of 273 made threes. In February, Knueppel had already broken the rookie record for three-pointers, surpassing Keegan Murray's mark of 206 (2022-23).

Knueppel's contribution was crucial to the Hornets' turnaround. After a 16-28 start, the Charlotte team managed a 28-10 record in the remaining regular season, finishing with a positive balance (44-38) for only the second time in the last decade, alongside LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller.

The debate over who deserved the award intensified throughout the season. In March, Hornets coach Charles Lee strongly advocated for his player, stating, "I don't even think it's a close race." However, on the Mavericks' side, players and coaching staff argued that their distinct roles justified Flagg's superiority. They pointed out that Knueppel benefited from being a secondary creator alongside Ball, while Flagg, at just 19, was his team's primary offensive engine and a frequent target of double-teams.

"They're completely different realities," commented Mavericks forward P.J. Washington in April. "He's 19 and doing what he's doing. Being the main guy is much harder than being a rotation player shooting from the corners or just hitting threes. He initiates most of our offense. Doing that at 19 is unprecedented."

The only direct confrontation of the season between the two rookies, on January 29th in Dallas, was memorable. Flagg shined with 49 points and 10 rebounds, while Knueppel responded with 34 points, his season high, including eight converted three-pointers.
