Convicted Maryam Sanda attempts escape during court proceedings
A mild drama ensued on Monday, January 27, 2020, at a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Maitama, as Maryam Sanda, the mother of two who killed her husband, Biliaminu Bello Haliru in their Abuja home, got convicted.
According to The Nation, at the pronouncement of the ruling, the proceedings of the court was disrupted when the defendant's mother and siblings, who were present in the courtroom reacted by shouting.
The defendant who attempted to flee the court from an exit door close to the dock, was reportedly crying in pains, which prompted the judge to suspend the proceedings for a while.
Delivering judgment on the matter which lasted over two years, Justice Yusuf Halilu held that there was circumstantial evidence coupled with her testimony and statement to the police that she 'fatally' stabbed her husband.
The judge dismissed Sanda’s statement that her husband fell on a broken Shisha pot during a fight on the ill-fated day, saying it's a 'smokescreen to deceive the court'.
According to Justice Halilu, available evidence proved that the accused stabbed her husband with a kitchen knife with the intent to 'kill'.
Recall that the Federal Capital Territory Police command filed criminal charges against Sanda, after she was said to have killed her husband in November, 2017.
Sanda reportedly stabbed her husband to death over allegations of infidelity, following a text message she saw on his phone sent to him by his mistress.
Haliru, who was a real estate developer, was the son of a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Haliru Bello.
