Conor McGregor is hoping for good news soon, but he also has some unconventional ideas on how his rematch against Max Holloway at UFC 329 should be handled.
McGregor sustained an injury after an awkward landing on his right foot early in the fight against Holloway and, despite his efforts, was unable to continue. The Irishman's knee has since been examined, and he is awaiting the results of a scan, presumed to be an MRI, on Thursday. These results will reveal the extent of the damage.
On Wednesday evening, McGregor provided an update on Instagram, while also suggesting that the outcome of the fight with Holloway should be changed to a “no contest,” and that losing bets from fans should be refunded.
“A few notes,” read a text image posted by McGregor on Instagram. “1. I will have the results of my leg scan tomorrow. 2. The fight should be declared a no contest and all bets refunded.”
Both of McGregor's suggestions have almost zero chance of materializing. A technical knockout due to injury can occur at any point in a fight, whether in the first or last minute. Furthermore, there was no improper ruling by officials, so an appeal would almost certainly be rejected.
As for bettors, some apps offer protection for early injuries in sports matches and might show leniency to their customers in unfortunate circumstances. However, an MMA fight is a completely different story, as an injury directly leads to a definitive outcome. Bookmakers earned significant sums from McGregor's loss, as the vast majority of bets were placed on him to defeat Holloway.
If McGregor were somehow to convince betting houses to refund their customers' money, it would be unprecedented.
