Coaches Unanimously Praise Raphinha; Sevilla Boss Questions Prestigious Award After Hat-Trick
Barcelona staged a remarkable comeback, turning a 0-1 deficit into a 3-1 victory and extending their winning streak to eight matches this season. The 29-year-old Brazilian made his presence felt just three days after netting a hat-trick against Racing Santander in a dominant 7-2 win.
He has now reached an impressive 14 goals across all competitions this season. Youssouf Fofana initially put the hosts ahead with a header in the 19th minute, but Raphinha spearheaded a swift and decisive response from the reigning champions.
Within three minutes, Andreas Christensen delivered a precise pass, and Raphinha fired a low shot into the corner of the net. His second goal came seven minutes into the second half, a header after Lamine Yamal collected a rebound and chipped it into the box.
The Brazilian hit the post in the 64th minute, but secured his third goal five minutes later when Rodri found a surging Yamal, who then laid the ball off to his teammate for a clinical finish past the goalkeeper.
"The decision to extend his contract is the best move for the club. When you see how he interacts with the fans and the team... He's a leader, he gives his all. He's having a fantastic season so far, and he was incredible in the second half today," commented coach Hansi Flick.
Even Luis Garcia Plaza, the coach of the defeated team, lauded Raphinha's performance. He also pondered other aspects: "I question why he isn't even nominated for the Ballon d'Or. He absolutely deserves to be there. That's why I don't put much faith in those awards," he stated, adding about the match: "We know how we play. We pushed Barça to their best version for them to beat us.
We enjoyed the first half; if we had gone into the second half with a 2-1 lead, we would have approached things differently after the break."
However, Flick revealed after the match that he would be without Christensen for some time. "He suffered a muscle injury; we have to wait for the tests. He's a great player, both with and without the ball. He controls everything, he brings calm to our positional play. He links up well with Pedri and the central defenders. He played a superb game."
The "Blaugranas" lead the table with a perfect record, holding a six-point advantage over Real Madrid and Real Betis, who were set to play their respective Matchday 7 fixtures on Sunday. FC Sevilla, after their second defeat of the season, currently sits in fifth place with 13 points.
