This development is the end result of a three year process, during which Robbins had no fewer than nine one-on-one interviews with each of Cisco’s independent board members. He however outran all the other candidates and although largely overlooked by the world, has been chosen to lead the company into the next era.

Following the footsteps of John Chambers, who led the company for two decades, will be tough. Restoring the glory of a company once referred to as one of the original four horsemen of tech, will be even tougher.

Although Cisco plays the transition as Chambers leaving on a high note, the reality is far from what the corporate narrative is. Competitors are circling and determined to cut down Cisco’s market shares in several segments of the market. There is no denying that the new boss has his work cut out for him.
