China's state broadcaster has confirmed the suspension of Spanish La Liga broadcasts following controversial remarks made by star forward Kylian Mbappé. Authorities in Beijing dismissed the explanations provided by Real Madrid, stressing that the player's comments "exceeded the boundaries of free speech" and that the Spanish giants cannot evade responsibility.
A spokesperson for the Sports and Youth Centre at China Media Group (CMG) stated that they do not accept Real Madrid's stance, which claimed Mbappé had no intention to cause offense and was merely sharing a personal opinion.
The state media giant, which halted all La Liga broadcasts, Mbappé-related fixtures, and commercial spots featuring the forward on October 26, made its position abundantly clear: there is "no room for dialogue" until Real Madrid issues a satisfactory official apology.
The official statement emphasized that the French international's comments had "insulted the Chinese people" and "crossed fundamental lines," leaving Real Madrid unable to distance themselves from their player's actions.
"Any words or actions that hurt the feelings of the Chinese people will inevitably face collective pushback from all sectors of our society. Real Madrid would do well to abandon any illusions to the contrary," the statement read.
The diplomatic rift erupted after Mbappé was asked in an interview about his favorite internet meme. The striker replied that he was most amused by an edited image placing his face onto the body of a "Chinese dictator"—a reference to a viral social media meme depicting Mao Zedong, although he did not mention the leader by name.
In the wake of the controversy, Chinese brands Dongpeng, Mengniu, and Milkground immediately terminated their endorsement deals with the French forward, while content featuring him was swiftly restricted across domestic digital platforms.
La Liga president Javier Tebas sent an official letter to CMG condemning the player's actions as "unacceptable" and offering a formal apology for the offense caused.
In response, the Chinese broadcaster demanded that La Liga executives, Real Madrid, and Mbappé himself issue public apologies and submit formal written statements.
The French superstar subsequently released a statement in French, Chinese, and English, expressing regret over his remarks and underlining his "deep respect" for the Chinese people and their history.
Meanwhile, Tebas met with China's Ambassador to Spain, Yao Jing, in a bid to defuse tensions. The Spanish top flight holds extensive commercial ties in the country, including a strategic partnership with the local professional league that runs through 2029.
