Chelsea's ownership has assured fans that the club has a "clear direction" for its future following the departure of chairman Todd Boehly. The American was a prominent figure in the Clearlake Capital consortium's acquisition of the club from Roman Abramovich in 2022.

However, he has now sold his stake, with majority owners Clearlake taking full control.

The club released a statement reassuring supporters of their "confidence" in the club's trajectory despite Boehly's exit.

"Yesterday marked a significant milestone and the beginning of Chelsea's next chapter. We thank our departing partners and are grateful for their contributions to the club. We move forward with a shared sense of purpose, a clear direction, and confidence in what lies ahead. Our ambition is clear: to compete at the highest level, win major trophies, and build sustainable success.

Chelsea FC supporters are the heart of this club and its true custodians for over 120 years. While we bear the responsibility of ownership, this will always be your club. We are committed to listening and building a Chelsea that you can be proud of, both on and off the pitch.

On-field success will always be our top priority. This means competing for the Premier League title and other major trophies, as well as strengthening the club commercially so we can consistently invest in the squad. We will also maintain our focus on Chelsea's future infrastructure – investing wisely and seeking the right long-term solutions for generations to come. We are ambitious for what Chelsea can achieve, and equally conscious of the responsibility that comes with leading this great club. We will continue to work for Chelsea's development – together. The Owners of Chelsea."

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter sold their 12.8 percent stakes for a small profit. The club will now be led by Behdad Eghbali and his business partner Jose E. Feliciano.

Boehly was a controversial figure among fans during his tenure, with some dissatisfied with his transfer strategy and frequent managerial changes.

Supporters protested against his leadership on several occasions, most recently in April, when hundreds of fans marched to Stamford Bridge with banners reading: "Boehly Out."
