The largest cities, Paris and Lyon, were the most affected. Clashes with police occurred nationwide, leading to a total of 342 arrests, with 250 individuals taken into custody, the ministry announced on Wednesday. Security forces faced pyrotechnic attacks in 688 incidents, and 1128 firecrackers were seized.

In Grenoble, a 49-year-old man died after watching the semi-final match on a bar terrace. Attackers pursued him and ultimately shot him in a side alley, reported Le Parisien, citing police. The motive for the act was likely a gang war.

The semi-final match coincided with the national holiday of July 14th – Bastille Day. This day is often marked by unrest, vandalism, and arson, DPA recalled.
