The power is in the hands of members of the public though; they get to choose whose videos get played on MTV Base. The video with the highest number of votes will get played on MTV Base (DStv channel 322), which has an audience of over 90 million people across the continent.

“MTV Base has given a lot of Nigerian artistes a huge platform to grow and improve over the years and it makes us happy to continue in this tradition”, said Colette Otusheso, Head of Marketing and Communications, Nigeria at Viacom International Media Networks Africa in a statement.

“We decided that the process should be democratised, and our viewers who actually watch the video content on MTV Base should be the ones to decide which upcoming artiste they want to listen to and see on TV”.

This month will see Kefchild’s ‘Oluwa’, Icee’s ‘I no go tell’, Banging’s ‘Good morning’ and Loxxy’s ‘Jeje’ go head to head to be the viewer’s choice.

“#BaseRateOrHate is a game changing platform for future music stars in Nigeria because it places the power to become known and liked squarely in the hands of viewers", Otusheso said.
