Champions League Blockbuster: Hancko faces in-form Kane as Škriniar's Fenerbahce take on Liverpool

Matchday 4 of the UEFA Champions League delivers a slate of high-profile encounters this Tuesday and Wednesday. The marquee showdown pits Atletico Madrid against Bayern Munich, featuring Slovak centre-back Dávid Hancko. National team captain Milan Škriniar leads Fenerbahce into battle against Liverpool, while injuries rule out Napoli midfielder Stanislav Lobotka and Stuttgart winger Leo Sauer.

Both Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich have registered one victory each in Europe's elite club competition this season, with just a single point separating them in the standings. While the Madrid side enjoyed a routine 2-0 weekend win away at struggling Levante, the Bavarians were pushed to their limits in a hard-fought 2-2 Bundesliga top-of-the-table clash against Borussia Dortmund. Atletico carry the superior momentum into the fixture, boasting a nine-match unbeaten run across all competitions.

Los Colchoneros have never lost to Bayern at home in three previous meetings and will once again count on their fervent home support. "Bayern are a massive opponent in the Champions League, but we hold the advantage of playing in front of our home crowd. At the Metropolitano, they will experience an extraordinary atmosphere—one of the best in world football. Once they see the reception our fans give us, they will realise we are playing with an extra man," said winger Giuliano Simeone, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.

Bayern will once again be without manager Vincent Kompany on the touchline as he continues his recovery from meningitis. To make matters worse, an already lengthy injury list featuring goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, midfielder Jamal Musiala, and forward Luis Diaz grew further following the Dortmund clash, with both Ismael Saibari and Serge Gnabry ruled out.

"It is a crucial match for us. We have already drawn twice in the Champions League and understand how vital a top-eight finish is. It is going to be a tough away fixture, and we must elevate our game to get the win," noted recently crowned Ballon d'Or winner Harry Kane. Although the England striker missed a penalty against Dortmund, he has found the net in each of his last ten Champions League appearances and is one goal away from matching Cristiano Ronaldo's tournament record.

Can Fenerbahce bounce back after Slavia setback?

Milan Škriniar's Fenerbahce host Liverpool on Wednesday aiming to snap a ten-game winless drought in the Champions League proper. The Turkish side squandered a two-goal lead on Matchday 3 to draw 2-2 with Slavia Prague before suffering a 2-1 domestic defeat against Göztepe at the weekend. Third-placed Liverpool have claimed a maximum nine points from their three European outings, scoring 12 goals, though they head to Istanbul on the back of a 1-0 Premier League loss to Arsenal on Sunday.

The Gunners travel to face Slavia Prague, who have picked up just one point so far. The Czech outfit are enduring a 22-match winless streak in the Champions League group and league phases, with their last victory coming in their competition debut against Steaua Bucharest back in September 2007. They are now just two games away from matching AEK Athens' unwanted tournament record.

"Naturally, the longer this run lasts, the more frustrating it becomes. It is a long streak, and because it is constantly brought up, it plays on my mind more than before. Everything needs to fall into place, and we must give one hundred percent," admitted Slavia manager Jindřich Trpišovský, speaking to AFP. The clash comes exactly a year to the day since Slavia suffered a 3-0 home defeat to Arsenal.

Lobotka sidelined

Napoli will be without key midfielder Stanislav Lobotka for their trip to Porto after he picked up an injury in Wednesday's 4-1 win over Monza. The Italian champions have three points so far following a thrilling 4-3 victory over Bodö/Glimt, while Porto remain bottom without a point after three consecutive defeats. Elsewhere, Stuttgart head to Istanbul without 20-year-old winger Leo Sauer, who sustained a glute injury in training. The German side have enjoyed a strong start with two wins and a draw, including a 3-0 triumph over Slovan Bratislava in mid-October. Galatasaray collected their first points on Matchday 3 with a 4-2 victory away at Lille.

Another standout fixture sees Barcelona host high-flying Aston Villa, who sit second in the table having won all three matches with an aggregate score of 12-3. Unai Emery's men have swept past Club Brugge, Fenerbahce, and Viking Stavanger. The Catalans responded to back-to-back defeats against Paris Saint-Germain (4-2) and Real Madrid (2-1) with an emphatic 6-1 thrashing of Alaves on Saturday.

Major test for depleted PSG

French champions Paris Saint-Germain face a stern examination on Tuesday when they take on Spain's Villarreal. The Parisians' push for a third consecutive crown in Europe's top competition has been rocked by a devastating injury blow to one of their most influential stars.

Talismanic winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in his right knee during their victory over FC Barcelona, ruling him out for the remainder of the season. The 25-year-old Georgian international was the standout performer in last season's tournament, racking up seven goals and four assists in eight games, including a decisive display in the final against Arsenal.

Manager Luis Enrique has nevertheless suggested the club will not panic-buy during the January transfer window. "I don't believe we necessarily have to rush into signing new players. I stated at the start of the season that the squad could remain intact even through two or three injuries. However, we remain open to opportunities," the Spanish tactician stated.

Following Bradley Barcola's record-breaking €145 million summer switch to Liverpool alongside several other forward departures, Kvaratskhelia's prolonged absence presents a serious challenge. Summer arrivals Ferran Torres from Barcelona and Belgian winger Mika Godts from Ajax are yet to find consistent form in the French capital.

"We need everyone"

PSG's attacking options are further depleted with Ousmane Dembele out with a hamstring strain. Moroccan defender Achraf Hakimi provided a welcome boost by netting a hat-trick in Friday's 5-1 rout of Le Havre, cementing his reputation as arguably the world's premier right-back. Meanwhile, captain Marquinhos and left-back Nuno Mendes remain on the treatment table.

"We need everyone if we are to compete for silverware. With our current injuries, doors will open for other players to step up," Enrique emphasised.

Despite their mounting personnel problems, PSG continue to command immense respect on the continental stage as they prepare for a demanding run of fixtures, confident in their ability to mount another deep Champions League run.

Other fixtures across Europe

Real Madrid will aim to maintain their 100% record when they visit Athens, while Manchester City travel to take on RB Leipzig. Borussia Dortmund host fellow perfect starters Real Betis, who are scheduled to play in Bratislava later this month. Norwegian outfit Viking, featuring Slovak goalkeeper Ľubomír Belko, welcome Sabah Baku. Tuesday's meeting between Shakhtar Donetsk and Sporting CP will be officiated by an all-Slovak refereeing team led by Ivan Kružliak, alongside assistants Branislav Hancko and Ján Pozor.
