A new championship belt, a new scar. It's been an eventful week for Carlos Ulberg.
Just five days after claiming the light heavyweight title by knocking out Jiri Prochazka at UFC 327, the new champion went under the knife for a knee injury. On Thursday, Ulberg (14-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) posted an Instagram story with the caption "Knee surgery done," accompanied by a photo from his hospital bed. Shortly before, the fighter had uploaded a picture from Harry Reid International Airport, suggesting the procedure likely took place in Las Vegas.
The exact extent of Ulberg's knee damage and his recovery timeline remain unclear. He sustained the injury during one of the initial exchanges in Saturday's main event, held at the Kaseya Center in Miami. Despite the setback, Ulberg managed to secure a knockout victory over Prochazka (32-6-1 MMA, 6-3 UFC).
Following the fight, Prochazka claimed he made a mistake by showing mercy to his injured opponent, a decision he later paid dearly for. This assertion angered Ulberg, who fired back with sharp words for the Czech fighter. The New Zealander stated he has no interest in a rematch with Prochazka.
However, given the uncertainty surrounding his recovery, it's unclear what the organization's next move will be or if an interim title will be introduced.
