Burna Boy is like a man with second life, and all of this is happening because of his trip to the United Kingdom. Banned from the UK 5 years ago, for his part in an alleged gang-related crime, the boy returned to Nigeria, where he has since blossomed into a fine star.
Burna Boy’s brand of experimental Afrobeat, pop and fusion sounds propelled him to the top of Port Harcourt music, from where he carried out an onslaught on Lagos in 2013, as the single, ‘Like to party’ powered by his record label, Aristokrat Records, became an international smash hit. That was followed by a debut album, “L.I.F.E”, in the same year. His partnership with LeriQ was amazing and birthed his greatest moments till date. Other impressive hit songs, ‘’, ‘’ came through from that partnership.
But things went downhill in 2014, as the singer split with Aristokrat Records, fell out with LeriQ and became the enfant terrible of Nigerian music. Controversy poured in from all corners, as he became a magnet for everything unsavory on the celebrity lifestyle. He once beat up a man, slapped a woman, fought with a producer and more. On the mic, his powers waned. His sophomore album failed to ignite. Only ‘’ made it through to become a hit, and guess what? He fought that producer bitterly.
Lately, he has been dragged on social media by a lady, Uju Stella, who accused him of getting her pregnant. Although the story later turned out to be false, it was reflective of how easy it is for him to be a target of controversy.
But right now, all is changed. Burna Boy is like a man reborn. He has returned to Aristokrat Records, where recording has begun for a new album. The singer’s ban from the UK has expired, and now he has gone back, led by his handlers to cement new business opportunities. The joy on his face is palpable, almost infectious, as he has engaged with London’s Heathrow Airport on social media, taken photos on his arrival, and performed at several venues.
The month of July is his birthday, and like a man who has been freed from captivity, he is embracing his newfound UK berth as a springboard for new life in his career. With his presence in the UK, he is making career moves by collaboration. He has been pictured in a studio with Krept & Konan, and also Sneakbo. According to sources close to him, more recordings are in place.
He has also been on the legendary Tim Westwood's TV show, and had an interview with DJ Neptizzle, the Club DJ/Radio DJ on NTS and Reprezent 107.3 FM London. The new Beat FM in London also has had him stop by.
Burna Boy will spend the month of July unofficially touring the UK, with promoters scrambling to get him booked for the night, as he offers novel entertainment to the British nightlife. He is a man unleashed, a person far away from his homeland, where strife and personal misfortune has imperilled his growth. The UK offers that breath of air to fill his lungs anew, and a chance to be more than what he is.
At the moment, he is taking it well. Long may that continue.
