Dan Burn expressed his profound disappointment following England's 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina at the 2026 World Cup. Clearly emotional about the late turnaround, he also attempted to pinpoint the logical reasons behind the loss.

“I'm absolutely gutted. I think for the majority of the game, we executed our plan pretty well. But obviously, once we scored, we became a bit passive and slowed the tempo, and ultimately, we paid the price. We probably conceded too many chances, and when that happens, it's normal for them to score. It was disappointing from our side. In other matches, we've defended better and shut them down. To be so close to a World Cup final hurts.”

“You know how well we've defended leads in previous games. That usually happens to most teams.”

“I wish I had the answer. I'm very, very proud of what we achieved in this tournament. Honestly, I thought we would make it. I had that feeling. I truly believed we had something special on our hands. At this level of football, the fine margins make all the difference. Argentina has already achieved that, and it probably shows,” Burn stated.
