The kickoff time for the World Cup clash between Mexico and England at the Azteca Stadium will remain unchanged, with the match set to begin as scheduled at 3:00 AM Bulgarian time on Sunday night/Monday morning, FIFA confirmed, as reported by Sky Sports.
Last night, there was consideration to move the Round of 16 fixture six hours earlier to 9:00 PM Bulgarian time on Sunday, which would be 12:00 PM local time in Mexico. This was due to forecasts predicting a potential storm at the originally scheduled kickoff time.
However, both teams reacted strongly against the proposed change, as it would disrupt their preparation schedules. Additionally, thousands of fans had planned their travel arrangements based on the original kickoff time, and a six-hour shift would jeopardize their ability to reach the stadium on time.
FIFA stated that there are no plans to alter the kickoff time, and weather conditions will be monitored until the last moment. According to regulations, the governing body has the right to "cancel, reschedule, or relocate one or more matches for any reason and at its sole discretion, including as a result of force majeure or for health, safety, or security considerations."
Meanwhile, Mexico City has experienced rainfall over the past few hours.
