According to ESPN's Dave McMenamin, the club explored the possibility of signing the four-time league champion while he was a free agent. However, Boston never emerged as a primary contender for the player's signature.
James' agent, Rich Paul, revealed that during the search for a new team, he discussed potential collaborations with representatives from 27 NBA clubs. As negotiations progressed, the circle of contenders gradually narrowed to five teams: Philadelphia, Cleveland, Miami, Golden State, and Minnesota.
Ultimately, James chose to join Philadelphia, one of Boston's main rivals in the Eastern Conference.
