The book, Soar by TD Jakes is one of my favourite books because it is rich with tremendous insight on starting and running a business.
From developing a business plan to branding and social media management to knowing your market, TD has truly insightful examples to spur the reader on.
I love its aviation theme, which pairs nicely with the book's title. I totally draw energy from the imagery created by the Wright Brothers, who never got tired of reworking their inventions until it was ready for the market. The brothers studied the wind and how it would affect their ultimate goal.
This book is divided into four parts.
Part 1.
The first part relates to expanding your vision, which encompasses having an idea, which would be fine-tuned by the trends of the environment and then set into motion.
Part 2.
The second part expounds upon building your wings, which would be done by having a business plan and utilising an online platform and making use of innovation.
Part 3.
The third part elucidates on matters relating to clearing the clouds, which are assembling your team of workers, mentors, recognising your competition and how to build relationships with them, as well as sharpening your entrepreneurial leadership skills.
Part 4.
The fourth part teaches one how to soar to new heights. This involves utilising branding and marketing techniques, leveraging social media influencers and also establishing and continuing your business legacy by sharing your business gleanings with mentees, as well as others. I'd say though, that creating a platform for effective mentorship is also important, and could translate into effective CSR and public relations strategies for your business.
This book has a fairly explanatory glossary of financial terms, as well as a good number of financial references in the chapters themselves. I love the relatable examples that TD Jakes uses, such as Soulja Boy, Kobe Bryant, Justin Beiber and Patti Labelle, to show examples on how social capital provides a platform to garner investment, and also facilitate a transition from one business career to another.
Published in 2017, this book represents a super current and apposite approach to starting and growing your business.
