The army launched the operation after gunmen suspected to be members of the sect killed about a dozen villagers on Wednesday.

“Our defence forces who are engaged in the operation inside Nigeria between the towns of Malam Fatori and Damasak, killed the insurgents on Thursday,” a security source, who chose to remain anonymous, told Reuters.

Boko Haram has intensified its attacks in recent times and has killed more than 500 people since May 30.
