Bezos Consortium Buys Larger Liverpool Stake Than Expected, Deal Includes Key Clause
The consortium, which includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has acquired a 38% stake in Liverpool from Fenway Sports Group, according to British media reports. Initially, it was believed that "1892 Holdings" had secured a minority share ranging from 30 to 33%.
The consortium was represented in negotiations by Amit Bhatia, son-in-law of billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. Until recently, Bhatia was a shareholder in Championship side Queens Park Rangers. Reports indicate that "1892 Holdings" also holds an option to become the majority owner of the elite English club. This option is active for the next 12 months, with current owners Fenway Sports Group setting a final price of approximately $8 billion for the entire share package.
Sources from Sky Sports and CNBC suggest that the existence of an option does not guarantee a future deal. Should such a deal not materialize, Fenway will continue to control the majority stake and, consequently, manage Liverpool.
