Barcelona traditionally unveiled their squad for the new season in the Joan Gamper Trophy match. In the 61st edition of the fixture, the Catalans faced Egyptian side Al-Ahly. The hosts secured a 2-1 victory. Egyptian talent Hamza Abdelkarim opened the scoring after half an hour against his former club, while Raphinha converted a penalty at the end of the first half. Zizo netted for the visitors in the 51st minute, and new Barça signing Anthony Gordon missed a penalty in the 90th minute.
The action on the pitch over the 90 minutes was secondary, as the evening was a celebration for the club's fans. Before the match, all the players took to the field, and head coach Hansi Flick and captain Raphinha addressed the crowd. Shortly before that, new signing Rodri was introduced to the Camp Nou faithful. The Spain captain was greeted with thunderous applause and chants of his name, while President Joan Laporta watched from the stands with a broad smile. Other summer additions – Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi – also received a warm welcome from the supporters.
Rodri, who will wear the number 16 shirt at his new club, did not feature in the match, and it remains unclear when he will make his debut, as he only had his first training session with the team this morning. Barcelona kicks off their La Liga season on Sunday with an away game against Elche.
"We have a great team, thanks to Deco and the president. We are ready to fight for all trophies. We need all Barça fans. Together we are stronger," Flick stated during the presentation.
Raphinha first wished a speedy recovery to young Rooney Bardghji, who suffered a serious injury. He then congratulated the world champions, Spain. "Wearing this shirt is a huge responsibility, but it's one of the most beautiful things I've experienced. It will be the same for the new signings. We will continue to grow as a team," the Brazilian added.
Barcelona currently lacks a typical central striker following Robert Lewandowski's departure. Fans hope the club will sign one by the end of the month, but today Flick opted for 18-year-old Egyptian talent Hamza Abdelkarim. Raphinha and Lamine Yamal operated on the wings, while Pedri and Gavi started on the bench and came on in the second half. After the break, Gordon and Adeyemi made their unofficial debuts.
