Durban to host 2022 Commonwealth Games
Durban will host the 2022 Commonwealth Games after being the only bidder for the event, it was confirmed on Wednesday.
The Canadian city of Edmonton had been the other potential host, only to withdraw its bid in February citing financial reasons and falling oil prices.
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) confirmed Durban 2022 during its general assembly held in New Zealand.
The event is set to open on July 18, the birth date of South Africa's late president Nelson Mandela.
South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASOC) president Gideon Sam said the country was ready.
"I stand before you today an extremely proud South African," he said.
"We are ready to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games, for the very first time on African soil, in Durban South Africa in 2022."
The Games are set to be hosted by Gold Coast, Australia, in 2018 before they head to Durban.
