Aston Villa Nearly Squandered a Decided Match Against Sunderland, But Snatched Victory in Stoppage Time
Aston Villa secured a crucial 4-3 victory over Sunderland at Villa Park, significantly boosting their chances of finishing in the top five and qualifying for next season's Champions League. The Birmingham side held a two-goal lead twice, but with just three minutes remaining, the score was level at 3-3. Tammy Abraham ultimately clinched all three points for Villa in stoppage time. This win maintains Villa's three-point advantage over Liverpool, and more importantly, extends their lead to ten points over Chelsea and other contenders for a top-five spot.
Unai Emery made three changes from the previous match. Tyrone Mings, Ian Maatsen, and Ross Barkley returned to the starting lineup. Régis Le Bris fielded the same squad that started in their victory against Tottenham.
Ollie Watkins gave the Birmingham side a flying start, scoring just 98 seconds into the game with a header from two yards out after a cross from McGinn. However, only seven minutes later, Chris Rigg equalized with a well-placed shot into the far corner. This marked the 18-year-old's first Premier League goal.
In the 15th minute, Onana came close to putting Villa ahead again, heading a McGinn cross against the post. In the 36th minute, Ollie Watkins scored his second goal of the day. The English international once again found the net with a close-range header, this time from a Maatsen cross.
Sadiki missed a golden opportunity to equalize in the 42nd minute, but his shot was blocked by Onana.
In the 46th minute, it looked as though Aston Villa was taking a significant step towards victory as Morgan Rogers, set up by Watkins, made it 3-1. Watkins then missed several good chances to complete his hat-trick, but Sunderland also posed a dangerous threat. The 'Black Cats' struck between the 86th and 87th minutes, leveling the score with two goals in just 58 seconds. First, Tray Hume dispossessed Sancho, advanced, and scored a fine goal from a tight angle, followed by Wilson Isidor making it 3-3. Sancho again lost possession, Le Fee set up the Haitian, Martinez slipped, and Isidor had no trouble finding the net.
In the 93rd minute, Sunderland could have completed a full comeback, but Martinez made a crucial save after Diarra went one-on-one with him. Seconds later, Tammy Abraham secured the win for Aston Villa, heading in a perfect cross from Digne.
