Aston Villa will not pursue legal action against Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher. The Birmingham club had threatened the former England international with legal proceedings after he aimed "unacceptable insults" at their supporters last week. Carragher quickly apologised, averting further legal dispute.

Carragher told Aston Villa supporters to "shut up" after facing backlash for his comments. Speaking on a podcast, he had suggested that current Villa manager Unai Emery should consider any potential approach from Manchester United if the Red Devils decide to dismiss boss Michael Carrick.

According to the PA news agency, he later apologised for his remarks: "My phrasing was clumsy and inappropriate. I can assure Aston Villa supporters that it was intended to be tongue-in-cheek, but I fully understand it did not come across that way. I sincerely apologise."
