Aston Martin Could Revert to Mercedes Engines

Honda's updated power unit, which debuted at the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, still lags behind the engines from other manufacturers. While the power output has increased by approximately 17 horsepower, with another 15 expected soon, the Japanese manufacturer remains about 70 horsepower short of the most powerful engines in Formula 1 this season.

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso managed to score points on Sunday, but the team has identified a regression in the Honda power unit's drivability, suggesting that the gains from the power increase will soon be negated.

According to an anonymous Ferrari engineer who spoke to Autoracer, Honda will not be able to match the top Formula 1 power units even by 2027. This shortfall is predicted to hinder Aston Martin, despite anticipated improvements in their chassis and aerodynamic package. This forecast is based on Scuderia Ferrari's own experience, as it took them two seasons to catch up on engine and hybrid development.

It is believed that Aston Martin's contingency plan involves a return to Mercedes power units, potentially for the 2028 season if feasible. Lawrence Stroll and Toto Wolff held a meeting at Zandvoort over the weekend, a fact confirmed by both teams, though no further details were disclosed.

Neither Aston Martin nor Mercedes has officially commented on this potential direction for the British team's development and its relationship with Honda.
