Argentine President Declines World Cup Final Attendance, Citing Quirky Reason

Argentina will be without its head of state during the World Cup grand final. President Javier Milei announced shortly after the thrilling 2-1 victory over England that he would not travel to the United States and would watch the battle for the coveted trophy from his residence. The reason is an unusual superstition he refuses to abandon.

Argentina's knockout stage matches at the World Cup are always a guarantee of high-octane drama. It's not the first time Lionel Scaloni's squad has managed to turn a game around in their favor. They proved it again in the semi-final against England, and now the entire nation is celebrating their continued fight to defend the championship title.

Argentine President Javier Milei, known for his intense passion for the national team's games, admitted to experiencing strong emotions. After their previous victory against Egypt, he shared a spontaneous reaction on social media platform X, and his emotion was palpable even after the successful semi-final.

"We're crying. Let's thank this incredible group of players who bring us so much joy. Now we're going for Spain, whom we'll defeat on Sunday to win a second consecutive title," Javier Milei, who has been in office since 2023, reportedly wrote according to tn.com.ar.

When asked if he would travel to the grand final, he answered without hesitation: "I will continue to watch it from Olivos, as is proper. I've watched all the matches from Olivos," stated the head of state. Quinta de Olivos is the official residence where he is currently staying.

However, he doesn't post any videos from this location. The reason might be a surprising superstition related to watching the games. "I watch them in a jacket and sweat like crazy, but the only time I took it off, they scored against us, so I'll never take it off again," Javier Milei revealed.

Interestingly, his predecessor also did not attend the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar. Thus, we didn't see a second leader alongside Emmanuel Macron. "Like millions of my compatriots, I will enjoy the World Cup final at home," Alberto Fernández declared four years ago, hinting that his presence might bring bad luck to the footballers.

It seems the current president plans to continue this tradition. However, he made one more promise. Should the Argentine national team defend their title, the players will be able to celebrate at a special location in the heart of Buenos Aires.

"If the players want to use Casa Rosada, I've told them it's available. My sister has arranged everything so that no one will be there that day. No one will disturb them, no one will steal their glory. That is my commitment," Javier Milei pledged.
