Argentina's Hero to Play Through Pain in Final, Ignores Broken Finger and Refuses Surgery
The 33-year-old goalkeeper revealed he is still feeling the effects of a fractured ring finger, an injury sustained on May 20th during a warm-up before the Europa League final. Despite the injury, he helped Aston Villa to a 3-0 victory over SC Freiburg.
“My hand still hurts every day. All the specialists I’ve spoken to have told me I need surgery. However, I’ve decided to postpone it,” Martinez stated, according to DPA.
He added that the injury primarily limited him during training, but since the World Cup round of 16, he has been able to train fully again and feels significantly better. Martinez was also Argentina's number one during their triumph at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and now he could secure a fourth world title for his country.
